To meet people easily and make friends in a new city, explore, open up and reinvent yourself.
It can be exciting yet daunting to move to a new city, start another job and settle into a new home. Having friends and family nearby can provide comforting support, but many people don’t know a soul when they arrive at their destination. Loneliness and isolation can creep in if people don’t get out and connect with others.
Here are some tried and true tips for meeting people easily and making friends in a new city.
Hang out where you’re comfortable. Do you love going to the local coffee shop for a latte every morning or sitting on your favorite bench at the community park to watch people stroll by? Don’t be intimidated because you don’t have your local hangout nearby, create a new one. Try out a few different places that appeal to you and when you find one that feels good, start going there every day. Soon you will feel comfortable and start meeting other regulars.
Join a group or organization. A great place to meet like minded people and make new friends is through groups or organizations where the members have a shared interest. Enjoy gardening; look for a gardening group. Love hiking; check out the local hiking club. Play sports; join a community team. If you’re shy about meeting new people, Toastmasters is a great organization for overcoming fears of public speaking while meeting new people at the same time.
Take a class. Whether it’s a weekend workshop or weekly course, learning about something new with other students is a safe and fun way to meet people as you are all new to each other. What are you drawn to – what would you love to know more about? Explore community center and education calendars to spark your interest.
Teach a class. If you like to teach, offering your information and resources to others through a class or workshop at your local education or community center is another way to meet people easily while earning some extra income at the same time.
Volunteer with a local charity. Non-profit organizations are always looking for volunteers to help out with a variety of tasks. Look in your local phone book for a list of organizations and contact one that touches your heart. While sharing your skills and talents with them, you’ll meet new people.
Attend arts and cultural events. Keep your eye out for bulletin boards and announcements in the community paper for arts and cultural events that might interest you. Over time, you’ll start to recognize familiar faces and feel comfortable initiating contact.
Reinvent yourself. Starting fresh in a new city provides a wonderful opportunity to take risks, be bold, and open up to new aspects of your self. Be courageous and have fun exploring new opportunities, as well as new people.
Try a few of the suggestions above and before you know it, you’ll have a variety of new friends.
