The Spiritual Purpose of Meditation is to Awaken

The spiritual purpose of meditation is to awaken to who you really are.

There are so many benefits of meditating regularly. People experience an array of mental, emotional and physical health benefits. But the spiritual purpose of meditation goes beyond the mind and body; it goes directly to the soul.

When we tune out all of the external distractions, we touch into the eternal essence of who we really are. We awaken to our true spiritual nature.

Over the course of a lifetime it’s easy to get lost in all the tantalizing sights and sounds of the world. We become hypnotized and believe that physical form is the only reality. Until one day, when we begin to spiritually awaken and discover another bigger, truer reality that goes beyond what the intellectual mind can perceive.

I’ve been meditating for over 10 years and I’m still uncovering and discovering who I really am, beyond what I thought I was. I now know that I am not my:

~ Physical body – it is a glorious vehicle to experience and express myself through.

~ Intellectual mind – it is a wonderful tool to use for comprehending the complexities of the tangible world.

~ Thoughts – often random and useless, but occassionally helpful during contemplation.

~ Emotions – this is how my physical body communicates and expresses itself.

~ Sensations – this is another way my body communicates information.

~ Job or career – an expression of my passion and a way to create financial abundance.

~ Various roles – interesting, temporary agreements or contracts with other human beings.

~ Characteristics – these are aspects of my human personality, some pleasant, some not.

~ Image – this is how others perceive me or how I present myself.

As I peel away the layers of what I’m not, I have less need for drama, control, manipulation and games of any sort. The old challenges of life hold less stimulation and I revel in the simplicity of life.

The more I meditate, the more I understand how the spiritual purpose of meditation is to awaken to who I really am. I am discovering that I am:

~ Boundless – when I let go of everything I’m not, there’s no sense of a separate self.

~ Eternal – I have no beginning or end, no birth or death, I just am.

~ Creative – I create and manifest my human life in any direction I choose.

~ Potent – I can direct energy and transform energy dynamics within myself, relationships and situations.

~ Powerful – As spirit, I have the power to create worlds.

My higher purpose is to bring this awakened state into my every day human life, not just when I’m meditating. Imagine how wonderful life flows when you are fully awake, seeing through the illusions of time and space, transcending duality, and touching into the Source of all life.
